With their Serie A (SA) survival still far from certain, Sassuolo play
host to title chasers Napoli this weekend in a crucial encounter.
The hosts have had a tough season so far and are 15th in the league –
just three points above the relegation zone. However, they have picked
up four points in their last two games and are showing signs of
recovering from a torrid start to 2018 (P7, D2, L5) until February.
They face an uphill battle against a Napoli side that is eager to keep
pace with Juventus. Having led the table for so long, the visitors are
two points behind Juve. There is no doubt the visitors will be desperate
to fight for the title and stay alive in the race until their potential
decider against Juve on April 22.
Sassuolo’s home form (11 points) isn’t anything to write about and is,
in fact, only marginally better than that of Benevento (ten points).
They are winless in five games leading up to this round (D3, L2)
alternating draws with losses.
That is the mirror opposite of Napoli who are as yet unbeaten in 14
trips (W12, D2) to give them a league-high 38 points. Not just that,
they have conceded only seven goals in those games (league high) and
scored thirty (third best).
Players to watch: Khouma Babacar (SAS) has two goals in his last four
games and will once again be expected to lead their attack.
Dries Mertens sealed the win for Napoli in the reverse fixture and will
be keen to add to his 17 goals for the season.
Stat attack: Napoli have lost only once in their nine encounters against
Sassuolo (W5, D3, L1).
Mertens and Jose Callejon have scored 25 goals between them – a whopping
40% of the team’s total (63).
